That evening, I followed her directions, and was surprised at how far away she actually lived. I had the impression that her place was near mine, but even by bus it took about twenty minutes. She lived alone in an apartment house, square and white like a block of tofu, on the edge of town.

I finally got there. As always, I tried to guess the decor before I arrived. What I didn't imagine was that it would be the nearly empty apartment that it turned out to be. There was absolutely nothing to show her taste. She had a refrigerator, of course, and kitchen utensils, which were so nondescript that it seems more appropriate to call them implements. There were no rugs or cushions on the floor. A single table sat in the middle of one room, and the sliding paper door had one small hole in it. I stood there staring at it, and she presented her excuse in a strangely matter-of-fact way, "I've been thinking of fixing that hole, but it's just too much trouble."

Only the bookshelves gave a sense of her. Mounds of old English books, coffee-table books, photography books, Dickens, Henry Miller, Camus, Yukio Mishima, old paperbacks, fashion magazines, comics. It looked like a mosaic.

I said, "It's so empty."
